A runaway winner of the Paul Morgan Medal as the Broncos ‘Player of the Year’, Darren had a stellar 2002. Lockyer was also one of the 4 Broncos named in the World best, his selection capped off one of his best years yet. He was also named Dally M fullback of the year, footy show fullback of the year, Broncos players’ player and best back. During the season he also broke Terry Matterson’s long standing record as the Broncos’ leading point scorer.

What age did you start playing football? When I was 9 at Wandoan State School, which is out west near Roma

What has been your most memorable match? The 2000 Grand Final win

If you had a superpower, what would it be? X-ray vision

Did you excel in any other sports as a junior? No I was pretty ordinary at everything else

If you could have any four guests at a dinner party, who would they be? Jennifer Aniston, Bill Gates, My girlfriend and Ian Hewitson

Who has had the biggest influence on your career? Wayne Bennett

What is the ultimate – playing for Australia, playing Origin, or winning a premiership? Winning a premiership for me – but they are very hard to split. Each holds a special place in rugby league.
